Stereo Live Presents: Mark Fewer

Canadian Legend Mark Fewer joins Stereo Live for an evening of solo violin music by Ysaye, Schulhoff, and a new caprice by John Novacek and Atar Arad, written for Mark Fewer himself. Mark will also be joined by Stereo Live Artistic Directors Edwin Huizinga and Keith Hamm in a performance of the Kodaly trio. It will be a night to remember!

Described as “genre-bending” by the National Post, and “intrepid” by the Globe and Mail, Mark Fewer has performed around the world to critical acclaim in virtually every role asked of a violinist – and then some. His regular musical diet includes performances from the early baroque to the avant-garde, with recent performances as soloist with groups as wide-ranging as the Melbourne Symphony (Australia), the Fodens-Richardson Brass Band (UK), the Zapp Quartet (Amsterdam), and the McGill Percussion Ensemble (Canada). He is also a dedicated chamber musician, jazz violinist, artistic director, and teacher.

Bach from the Heart brings you a unique perspective on the communicative powers of music and poetry. Sheila Jaffé (violin),  Catherine Cosbey (violin), Brenna Hardy-Kavanagh (viola), and James Churchill (cello) are exploring one monumental work’s mood, using excerpts from other musical and literary works which express similar feelings. The result is an emotional experience – a time for looking inside and letting the words and sounds transport you. For this concert, you will need to bring not only open ears but open hearts as well.

The six sonatas and partitas for solo violin are like pillars in the violin repertoire. In Bach from the Heart, they are exploring them from the emotional angle. Written in different keys, each of the sonatas and partitas set their own particular mood.

Date: Sunday, 8 April 2018

**total length of the program is approximately one hour – no intermission

DANCOCK’S DANCE is an exciting new piece of immersive theatre from the creative team behind 2016’s smash hit HOGTOWN: THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE (which made the ‘must see’ and ‘top ten’ list for Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, NOW Magazine, among others).

World War One soldier John Carlyle Dancock returns from France shell-shocked and haunted by the sins of war. He is also judged unfit for society, and so is committed to an insane asylum, trapped by his own conscience and by the rigid rules of authority. In his struggle to survive, Dancock manages to find redemption and deliverance – and the possibility of love – when he connects with a fellow inmate, the mysterious Dorothea Gage.

In this groundbreaking production of Guy Vanderhaeghe’s play, THE HOGTOWN COLLECTIVE re-imagines Dancock’s Dance with original music and dance. This immersive show takes place in Toronto’s historic Campbell House Museum, transforming it into the mystifying asylum. Audience members are once again invited to experience the play from room to room in the newly-converted asylum, brought to life with powerful performances and eye-popping set & lighting design. Dancock’s Dance will leave you breathless, thanks to the stark lyricism of Vanderhaegue’s poetry. It will also redefine the possibilities of what theatre can be, and what theatre can do.  Audiences will lose themselves in Dancock’s Dance, and discover an unforgettable evening.

STEREO LIVE returns with Fire & Grace!

Edwin Huizinga on violin and William Coulter on guitar

STEREO LIVE – the underground, cross-genre chamber series – is still one of musical Toronto’s best-kept secrets. This November, STEREO LIVE celebrates its third season with the Canadian premiere of Toronto/California duo FIRE & GRACE. The violin-guitar pair will perform their stunning contemporary classical and folk arrangements.

EDWIN HUIZINGA, internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso, and WILLIAM COULTER, Grammy-winning master of the steel-string guitar, bring a dazzlingly fresh, unique sound spanning genre and tradition. On November 16, FIRE & GRACE will fill the Ballroom at Campbell House with breathtaking skill and delicate expression. STEREO LIVE Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga promises that “the journey will take you from a Prelude by Bach to an Irish reel, from a tango by Piazzolla to a Spanish love song, from a Vivaldi movement to a Balkan dance tune. Expressive and compelling melodies, spirited and graceful rhythms, and imaginative arrangements unite this diverse music. Our project traces the fire and grace that connects classical, folk, and contemporary musical traditions from around the world.” The duo will also release their debut album through Roaring Girl Records on November 11, 2016.

With an indie edge, warm, welcoming vibe, and world-class polish, STEREO LIVE features dynamic stars of classical, rock, bluegrass, and more, over its annual three-concert run. The series was founded by violinist EDWIN HUIZINGA, an international baroque and classical violinist who has established himself as a singular fixture in Toronto’s music scene, sharing the stage with some of Canada’s most famous indie rock bands, foot-stomping bluegrass pick-ups, and leading international orchestras.
